There is some drawback. The main one : app can't communicate with each other.

Example firefox and his extension keepass. As keepass can't communicate with firefox, you have to open both apps and switch their windows.

You can use flatseal to manage communication between apps but that's not an easy process and may prove a security issue if you don't understand the technical jargon.

Thank for the information. i didn't know since i use vanilla os :)

Snoopy ,
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

Well the part of cryptobros is a tradeoff for me.

And if we talk about on the crypto currency, i prefer the libre currency which is closer from libre/free software and very different from bitcoin.

On Lemmy, users are encouraged to use Matrix. A crypted chat.

@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

Sorry, the closest i came up aren't good solution but may help in your search.

  • Vanilla OS 2 (based on Debian) but it is under Gnome DE and in beta phase. Very begginer friendly. Maybe once it go out from beta it will supports other DE ? So check it around 6th month later or 1 year ?

But the problem is that their community is very small. If you want something stable, it's better to look for bigger community so you can benefit from their support and user's problems

There is fedora kinoite but you don't want anything related to IBM. That was the best compromise i can found.

  • NixOS but i don't know it. I'm affraid it will be a DIY distro at the beggining with the config file. But it will probably meet all your criterias.

Or the same OS from my steamdeck :

  • Steam OS ? It's an immutable OS based on Arch and support KDE by default. Full support of flatpaks. Only downside, i dunno if it supports other machines than the steamdeck. Nor if it uses the latest linux kernel. Maybe some variants ?
Snoopy ,
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

Ads and tracking ? Browser with the largest market share ? Well, we are back to IE6 monopoly. :(

Snoopy ,
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

Cyberpunk 2077, 250 quests. I haven't started phantom thieve yet.

Snoopy ,
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

Well immutable os have some limitation mainly from flatpak.

Snoopy ,
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

As a minetest player, the main menu screen work very well and only lack some option to filter servers by game and language.

So i understand if they prefer to focus on other issues.

(Constructively) What is your least favorite distro & why?

I’ve been distrohopping for a while now, and eventually I landed on Arch. Part of the reason I have stuck with it is I think I had a balanced introduction, since I was exposed to both praise and criticism. We often discuss our favorite distros, but I think it’s equally important to talk about the ones that didn’t quite hit...

Snoopy , (edited )
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

Unpopular opinion :

  • Arch, i installed it long ago so i can't remember anything except that i spent lot hours for its installation.
  • Reason : spend a lot time reading the wiki without an easy installer...even Ubuntu was better but i wanted a challenge and a better uderstanding on linux.
  • Some AUR package didn't work.
  • Why Arch ? To get the lastest os and package as i had a recent gaming laptop.

So I changed and prefered manjaro with its ui for linux os, graphic card...but some thing were broken...than i settled Pop-Os for 3 years and distrohopped again for immutable os : Vanilla OS and Fedora Kinoite. :)

Another distro :

  • Ubuntu
  • reason : snap and various decisions.
Snoopy ,
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

Yeah Arch is straight forward but is require an amazing amount of focus and concentration. :)

I should try gentoo as my next challenge, i guess i won't like it but in fact, i enjoy those challenge and trying new stuff. ^^

Sorry, my english comprehension is rusty. It is an unordered list. I used it to improve readibility on phone and separate topics.

If the topic is mixed in a paragraphe i would have a harder time to quickly retrieve informations. Here you can read Arch and ubuntu and why in a single glance.

Dark Soul serie. After dying for the nth time i gave up. I don't have enough time to red again and again the same path.

Getting over it, well it do save your progression, especially your mistake.

Well, i got some feedback, most creative people don't find gimp good, they won't switch.

Well dunno if it's because gimp lacks good tool that ease up their workflow or because we teached them adobe suite.

During my art course it was : adobe suite and autocad with 3d max.

But i knew blender, gimp and scribus way before entering art school because i disagree with adobe's licensing system and found it very expensive.

Imho, the current best creative software on linux is Blender. There is also Darktable and Rawtepee for light, contrast.

For inkscape, krita, i can't compare, i never used adobe illustrator, nor corel drawer.

Scribus is good, almost perfect but it lacks a very important feature that i can't replicate. Adobe Indesign is far more easier because of the guideline that tell ya this item is correctly aligned and has the same size.

Kdenlive, well featured but i find adding video effect easier on adobe premiere pro. And kdenlive had a lot stability issue, i lost my work several time and that's how i learned to setup automated save.

Autocad easily outmatched freecad, there were a huge difference in functionnalities. I don't know if it has changed since 10 years. It probably improved a lot.

I apologize for my english grammar.

Dunno, probably a new standard. Or a standarised battery ? I'm mot an expert in this area.

I think thats a good opportunity to slow technology and focus on our earth ressource management and waste. We can wait 20 years before buying new machine and set up new standard ? Then every producers test and create new prototype in their lab along technological foundation to help with their research ?

Yeah i discovered that and i was extremely furious. I bought a usbc cable around 10€ and it wasn't working because the device only supported a certain type of usbc. Apparently, there is some info about information in the eu website.

But i'm not able to understand any technical part...i just want a color : yellow charger/cable go with yellow port. Etc.

I'm afraid its worst than you think 😂

And another thing. In fact 3 pins is a security measure. 2 pins is for low powered device. I forgot if it was to prevent power outage or something else.

A year of surveillance in France: a short satirical tale by La Quadrature du Net (video.lqdn.fr)

Fighting against surveillance has never been easy. But in the past year it has been specially tough in France. This talk is about shedding light on the many situations where the French State used surveillance to increase repression, mainly against activists, during the last months. Because app manager doesn't work well. And there are the feedback on terminal that tell you about missing dependencies or broken packages...The fact you get those verbose log help for doing web research and solve lot problems. On GUI installing app isn't well done : it's slow, they don't tell you what they are doing nor why it fail.

The only limitation of terminal is when you want to work with file system. I need to see the tree and typing ls -a everytime isn't efficient. Example, i'm doing a git clone on a server throught ssh. But i have no way to know its structure and check if i downloaded it in the correct directory. I need a visual that tell me this folder is here, has those writing permission, is a tar archive... So i use both : filezilla and terminal, gui and cli. In fact, they are both very useful, so there no point comparing gui and cli, they both serve well their purpose.

I'm using CLI and GUI. For example, if i want to chose the correct keyboard and check its mapping : gui. If i want to add sources and its gpg key : app manager gui. There is no way i would enjoy typing this huge command line with flags from my mind, and i do lot mistype. Or installing the stack lamp ? on windows it was amazing and faster than linux. next, next, done.

Luckly we can copy-pasta those commands.

I’m a french moderator, we saw it, more exactly : j’lai lu. :)

Snoopy ,
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

i think humanoid robot are inefficient. We shouldn’t follow the blueprint of human body but give them legs and arms that are suited for mechanical move and metal structure so they are easier to maitain and repair.

Snoopy ,
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

Good point, i didn’t see that from that angle :)

Snoopy ,
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

Even if Mozilla don’t have a huge marketshare, they were behind Rust language. :)

Snoopy ,
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

An immutable OS that run all app whatever are their package distribution.

Later a full OS rewritten in Rust with goods tools that share folder’s content accross all devices and mass storage device as syncthing do.

Let’s imagine a button where you click on add devices, then you scan the QR code and chose which folder you want to share. :)

Snoopy ,
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

Ahah yeah but completely integrated in the OS so we do need to remind people to save their important data in 3 differents supports. I’m pretty sure people don’t do thoses saves. Except techies and people who learned it the hard way.

And a better UI where you can setup the folder space as a disk manager. eg : don’t save video on my phone. Limit the folder to 1gb on phone. And on external mass storage, share everything : 1tb

I think there is lot potential and that Syncthing should be integrated in the GNU/Linux’s core.

Snoopy ,
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

Yes and i didn’t reinvent the whell. However, I still remind people to do backup accross those devices. It’s not news but it’s not well applied by lot people, so i would hardcode it into the OS.

  • Do you have a phone ?
  • Please scan qr code
  • Choose folders
  • Do you have a mass storage device ?
  • Connect it
  • Chose folders
  • Warning : you haven’t setup any backup
  • Warning : your last backup was last week. please connect your mass storage device to save your backup.

So, for something new, i would like to improve those utilities/tools and expand their use.

Snoopy ,
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

Well, that depend a lot on how do you setup security.

On nextcloud, i can see which device are connected to it, who, when, where and i get alert mail. When you add a new devices, as it is in the settings you will need your password. You might want to extend this security to usb storage with an isolated environnement. So all you need is a dashboard.

The solution i suggest is also a security in case of hardware faillure. How many people do a backup and copy their important file regulary ? I think i’m just making their life easier by hardcoding it. For me it’s as brushing my tooth, it’s not mandatory, but it’s better to make it mandatory.

My vision of the future is having an os that’ll install itself on any device I own whether the manufacturers want me to or not. I want to own the things I own.

Same but i differ. I don’t want any kind of device to exist to reduce our footprint’s carbon. Eg :

I would limit phones to 3 models and remove all brand. No ads needed, nor announcement. Something low tech. There would be lot benefit on the software side and repairability. It’s easier to maitain and it leaves our hand free to improve the OS

Snoopy ,
@Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

That’s just crazy…Given my IT knowledge, I would be a Bantha fodder…I’m not sure i would be able to see those registry being written in the system log as my main skill is doing a search several time until i undertand what were the correct words for this case and try few command. Let’s see the first step would be disconnecting the wifi. And maybe use Kali ? Dunno.

Well that’s very scary, i apologize. Thank for sharing your story :)

    That depend.

    On the mental side, you can stop watching those news. They will basically tell you the same thing, again and again.

    The only real news will be when they stop.

    You should care because these human are killed. We may reach a third world wars. Or see an increase of fuel price ? Anyway, it will impact us.

    On the other way, you are watching it from a very distant land. So you can focus on your area, local community and don’t give a damn, it’s fine too, we can’t be everywhere. Or give support to those civilisian under bombe strike.

    Selfhosted Trello Alternative?

    My team wanted to start using Trello to better organize the work we have to do and, since I believe it’s much easier to start using foss software from the beginning rather then switching to it after years of using something else, I wanted to suggest now a different option, possibly selfhosted....

    Snoopy ,

    There is also nextcloud deck. It’s minimal but enough. Kanboard is also an alternative and there is another one but i forgot its name.

    Snoopy ,
    @Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

    Well, thank for this enlightement. Guess if i haven’t stumbled on this post, i would never knew from other people’s perspective.

    Well, I often use this apology : “I’m sorry you fell that way…” to acknowledge that people don’t have the same kind of sensibility. Some things hurt me but won’t and will never hurt you and vice-versa. And that’s normal.

    I do it as i think it’s the norm while feeling sorry. I don’t know how they interact, i mostly copy-pasta while i’m doing my best to repair my mistake and improve things.

    So, the sentence wasn’t about myself but the inherently human’s feeling and interaction.

    Cyberpunk 2077 and BG3, i started cyberpunk before the update with the new skill tree.

    It’s interesting, different. i think i prefer the old skill tree and its leveling mechanic. However, in the first version V have a poor clothing taste, it was almost as her second job was being a clown in an hospital. And i didn’t understand why i couldn’t make a good suit.

    So Devs corrected lot issue and i’m enjoying the ride even if the story has some problem with the spacing…The main quest and secondary missions doesn’t mix well, and i found out that Takamura could wait few weeks in basement until i finish few stuff. :)

    Snoopy ,
    @Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

    I play at low rez. So it’s mostly blury but correct and i’m used to low res game. Gunning is fine, it’s smooth but i might be wrong as i don’t play shooter a lot so i can’t tell the difference.

    I have some issue with driving car and the sound. There a kind of warp and i find hard to control the car. So i recommend a motorcycle, you can move easily between cars at fast speed.

    I can’t aim very accurately with joystick, so i geared my build toward intelligent gun and lot hacking.

    The new hack system removed the sneaking. It forces us to act quickly, launch other hack before jumping to the guning part.

    And for the new area, i haven’t explored it yet so i don’t know how the steamdeck will manage it. I’m kinda annoyed because most game increase performance and it’s not always a good thing.

    How to let my kids find quality games on Android? Right now they only find the pay to win / ad riddled games.

    My 9yo daughter has a tablet with family link, so I can monitor what apps she wants to install. As the garbage games are mostly at the top free, she keeps asking for games that I reject, in most cases because it’s riddled with ads....

    Snoopy ,
    @Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

    It’s not easy finding good game, harder for young kid :

    • Andor’s trail
    • Room
    • Mindustry
    • Mindtest, control may not be good
    • Milo milo, can’t recall its name but its a puzzle
    • Dragon quest
    • Broken age
    • Machinarium (and all anamita game)

    Do you think lemmy would be as popular as reddit?

    Hi, do you think lemmy would be as popular as Reddit ? I mean, many subreddits have much more posts compared to communities on lemmy… sometimes I scroll through Reddit sub top of month and see no end. At lemmy mostly I see 10 posts monthly… I do like concept of moving to lemmy, but it might make no sense if people’s are no...

    Snoopy ,
    @Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

    No, we shoudn’t. Framasoft, the french libre software NGO published an interesting article about mastodon and twitter (in french). To sum up, the article tells us we shouldn’t follow twitter footstep (it was before Elon Musk became the CEO) but embrace the fediverse.

    So, imho, after reading their post, it is clear that we are just copy-pasting some proprietary software and it’s a mistake because we may integrated some problematic design that were intended for analysis and ads purpose. And those proprietary software were a golden cage.

    The fediverse is not lemmy, it’s not mastodon. And the timeline is limited by its UI design to lemmyverse or mastodonverse. It shouldn’t. We should open them more while having good moderating tool.

    But firstly, Lemmy should improve their moderating tool. As a moderator in jlai.lu, and because our admin explained us various issues : the current state of Lemmy is worrying.

    So until those matter aren’t solved, i don’t want to see any community’s grow bigger nor openness to the fediverse because we aren’t ready and can’t protect other communities in the fediverse.

    Snoopy ,
    @Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

    Finish them you won’t regret it :) i never played bg2 but it was an amazing adventure. Bg3 is different and more deepth with relationship, it does look like DO2. :)

    Snoopy ,
    @Snoopy@jlai.lu avatar

    I have started cyberpunk 2077 thenkcontinued with its new update. The game is great, very good dialog. I’m enjoying it a lot on my steamdeck. :)

    However, there is few issue as cyberpunk universe is tied to the old cyberpunk’s concepts/ideas from the 90s, too much trash and sexual ads.
